Reggina and Atalanta fight for survival
Saturday, 07 June 2003
By James Bryan

Atalanta and Reggina face a two-legged relegation playoff after a dramatic finale which saw four teams locked on 38 points at the foot of Serie A. Rare away wins for both teams were not enough to guarantee survival as Modena and Empoli also finished on 38 points. Torino, Como and Piacenza had already been relegated.

Parma and Udinese qualified for the Uefa Cup at the expense of Chievo, who fell to a dramatic 4-3 defeat to champions Juventus despite a hat-trick from Oliver Bierhoff. Inter Milan finished second although they could only draw 2-2 at home to Perugia, qualifying automatically for the group stage of next season's Champions League.

AC Milan, who face Juventus in the Champions League final on Wednesday, fielded several youth team players and fell to a 4-2 defeat away to Piacenza. Milan finished in third place ahead of Lazio, who also have a place in the qualifying round for the Champions League despite falling to a 2-1 defeat at Udinese.
