Two goals from Ronaldo wrapped up a 2-1 win for Real Madrid over Valencia to move his side into the lead in the Spanish La Liga. The result moved them two points clear of Real Sociedad, who can regain the top spot when they play Malaga on Sunday. Deportivo La Coruna, who led the league two weeks ago, slipped up 3-0 against Celta Vigo to fall five points behind Real.

Ronaldo moved Real into the lead after 26 minutes with a rare headed goal from a Luis Figo cross. Valencia equalised six minutes later when Fabio Aurelio guided the ball past Iker Casillas. But Ronaldo sealed the vital win with a stunning second-half winner in which he charged through the Valencia defence and turned the ball sweetly past Santiago Canizares.

Celta overwhelmed Deportivo with two goals from Edu. Midfielder Jesuli opened the scoring as his header found its way into the net after 13 minutes. Edu opened his account with another header six minutes later before poking in a free-kick for a resounding victory..
